About Lecture

The Jeme Tien Yow Lecture (JTYL) is in memory of Mr. Jeme Tien Yow (1861-1919), the pioneer of underground space engineering in China, known as the "Father of China's Modern Civil Engineering". As a visionary engineer, he hosted the construction of China's first railway tunnel, Badaling Tunnel, during the late 19th century.

 

The lecture is hosted and organized by the journal of Underground Space, while the detailed operation about the lecture is fully supported by the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University.

 

The lecturers of the JTYL are chosen among the most eminent scholars with global reputation in the field of underground space, considering the candidates’ outstanding contributions related to significant scientific/technical developments in key areas of underground space. Each lecture is published in the journal of Underground Space. The editorial office of Underground Space helps organize the selection of the lecturer and the publication of the lecture.

 

The lecture is held regularly at RM A101, College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University during the last week of May each year. A short workshop is held before the lecture. The topic of the workshop is in the same area as the lecture.The lecture is free and open to public. Everyone can register for free to attend the lecture.
